Paul Strand became known for practicing what was referred to as straight photography, made “without tricks of process or manipulation.” After first visiting the Little Galleries of the Photo-Secession at the age of seventeen, he eventually befriended Stieglitz and showed him his early, Pictorialist-inspired work. Strand advocated "straight photography," and photographed street portraits to city scenes, machine forms, and plants with his distinctive clarity, precision, and geometric form. From 1904-09, he studied photography under Lewis Hine at the Ethical Culture School in New York, where he was born. Paul Strand and Alfred Stieglitz pioneered Straight photography in New York while the Hungarian-born László Moholy Nagy exploited pure photography to maximize the graphic structure of the camera-image.
